I began teaching in K12 education in the late nineties when educational technology was boom or bust. Schools were modern if they had computer labs and Microsoft Powerpoint. We taught students how to research online and create slide shows.
A few years passed and blended learning came on the scene as a powerhouse strategy for combining the best of online and face-to-face instruction. I immediately latched on and converted my courses to a full blended model. My school principal was supportive of my efforts and offered me a position as the Online Learning Coordinator. Now I had the resources to research and practice online and blended strategies.
I became skilled and knowledgeable about blended learning, developed an early version of the “blended learning continuum” and helped others convert their classrooms to a blended model. I presented at several conferences with the continuum idea and my path towards blended learning.
I was teaching adjunct and credit recovery online courses by this time and had created a successful blended summer school program. I made the move to full time online teaching and took on exciting challenges like gamifying and fully differentiating my courses according to a mastery/standards-based model. I began contract work as an online course developer and facilitator and realized my passion for eLearning and instructional design. Now I freelance and provide solutions in the education and business industries.
